When winter comes to the Court of Dreams, the war against the Subterranean of Nightmares freezes. To celebrate, the faerie queen holds a tournament where mortals compete for the prize of a dream come true. For outsider Willow Nightstalk, it’s the only way to break the curse making her as ugly as she feels.

But the deadly tournament has a darker purpose—to flush out flawed mortal blights on the perfectly pretty fae society… and to kill them. Any left alive are conscripted when war returns in spring. When the coveted prize can give you anything your heart desires, allies are likelier to stab you in your sleep than save you.

Surviving means securing the highly contested patronage of the powerful fae nobility. But when the notoriously recluse House of Shadow is the only option left, the odds are stacked against her. Especially since it’s led by the six beautiful fae boogeymen who rejected her, robbed her of magic, and ruined her life. She would rather let terrors drag her to the beneath.

But then the unthinkable happens.

For the first time in years, the House of Shadow chooses a protégé. Her.

Forced to live in their rundown castle, Willow starts uncovering secrets about the war, the oppressive queen, and the tragedy behind the Six’s forbidden obsession that left her broken. Soon, she doesn’t know who to trust, blame, or befriend. What’s worse is that sabotage is in the air, and bodies start dropping like flies. Safety means choosing between trusting her eyes or her battered heart. But if she chooses wrong, no dreams will come true—she’ll be dead.

Nothing is as it seems in the Court of Dreams, least of all the Nightmares.

Castle of Nevers and Nightmares is a slow-burn, spicy “why choose” dystopian-fantasy romance novel where the underdog heroine finds her inner power, the tension is hot, and the world-building is full of intrigue. It’s the first in the Fae Devils series, a Fae Guardians spinoff. Reading the Fae Guardians is unnecessary to enjoy this story, but it can enhance your reading experience as these characters have a past. It is recommended for mature readers due to language, violence, horror, and explicit sexual and dark situations.

Great

I really enjoyed this book. It was such a quick read for me but now I'm stuck waiting for the next book to come out 😢. I loved The Six and their baby dragon ❤️. I also really liked the main character Willow too. I didn't realize this was a spinoff series so now I'm heading off to read The Fae Guardians 🙂

Just.... wow.....

Be ready to read this in one sitting! Seriously! Get yourself a cuppa and a Tim Tam (or 3) and prepare yourself for something amazing.

Lana's awesome world building and ability to ensure you're attached to characters is second to none.

Do yourself a favour though, read the Fae Guardians series first, this book has spoilers and once you read it, I guarantee you'll want to read the Fae Guardians while you (painstakingly) wait for Book 2 to come out, so just go ahead... block outa weekend and get stuck into the whole lot!

Read as an ARC reader. I have read all of the Fae Guardians books that this book is a spin off from. I thought I was going to have a hard time with not picturing Willow as the little girl running from adults not wanting to go to bed or not wanting to take a bath. Lana did an amazing job with developing Willow into the beautiful woman she is, scars and all. The development of the Slaugh as sentient beings that can talk and have feelings made this story even better. Fox drained from the last five years of fighting his hive to remember their queen, thought things would greatly improve with Willow showing up. He not only had his work cut out from him with his brothers he had to fight hard to get Willow to see them as more than monsters. Willow coming to them cursed and not being able to say anything was not an issue, Fox was able to sniff out the curse. Willow slowly came around to seeing the Six as more than just monsters, she grew to love them. Together Fox and Willow were able to deduce that her mana had been stolen and were making plans to get it back when Fox made a deal that would change everything. Willow will have to find the courage to fight on and bring the Six together. Lana outdid herself with this one!! I cannot wait until book two comes out.

11/10 HIGHLY RECOMMEND

The spin off is fantastic! I laugh, I cried, I swooned over Fox. If you’ve read the guardian series, this is definitely a must to continue on the story. The spice is also WONDERFUL! I cannot get enough and cannot wait to see what happens and to meet the other five slaugh.
